How To Use Window Clings

Custom window clings are one of the most effective marketing tools you can use for your business without leaving behind any residue. The best part is that they can be used on nearly any glass surface and are best if you are looking to advertise upcoming sales, short term promotions, or long term branding initiatives.

However, you need to know the best ways to design, install, and store window clings for optimal marketing results and return on investment.

What Are Window Clings?

Window clings are decals or letters that are applied to your storefront window or other flat glass surfaces. Quite essential to your retail business, window clings are the advertising products you can use to provide accurate and timely information about your brand to passersby.

Apart from reinforcing your brand identity and promoting deals & sales, they give your clients a sense of your business mission. When window clings are properly designed and applied, they can produce great results for your business and generate more customer conversions and sales.

How To Apply Window Clings

Applying window decals and clings requires great attention to detail to produce desired results. First, you must thoroughly clean the window surface and window frame by removing any paint, dirt, grease, or grime that could impact the cling’s adhesive properties. This step also applies to floor decals

Next, carefully remove the backing paper. It is important to remember that if the film contains letters or cut-outs, you need to be extra careful when removing the backing paper, or you will end up tearing the film itself. You can also apply water to the window to help your decals stick. Use a squeegee to work out any creases or wrinkles that may be visible. Start from the center of the window cling and slowly move the squeegee from the center out in a clockwise motion.

Window Clings Application Methods

When it comes to the application of window clings, there are two primary two methods to choose from:

Wet Method

  • The method is more suitable for large decals with a size of over 12″x12″.
  • In this method, you must first prepare a wetting solution by mixing 2-3 teaspoons of liquid household detergent in water.
  • Remove the static cling from the board and carefully lay the material on a flat, clean surface with the side up, which will be adhered to the surface.
  • You need to cover the application surface with a wetting solution and place the cling in contact with the application surface. The wetting solution used here will allow the window cling or decal to slide across the surface for optimal positioning.
  • As soon as this is done, you need to roll the water out. Working from the center of the decal to the edges, using either a rubber roller or a squeegee. You can also use paper towels to blot any excess moisture, followed by rubbing the edges to ensure the window clings have adhered properly.

Dry Method

  • The dry application method is recommended to apply small clings less than 12″x12″ in size.
  • In this method, you need to remove the static window cling from the backing and place it directly on the surface.
  • Once you are sure that the material placement is correct, all you need to do is pick up the entire cling and reposition without attempting to slide the cling.
  • As soon as the material is in position, make sure to roll any trapped air out, working from the center of the window clinging to the edges using a rubber roller.

How To Store Window Clings

Certain decals can be reused, like magnetic car signs for instance. If you wish to reuse your decals or simply store extras until you need them, follow these steps:

  • Keep decals and clings stored in a cool, dry place.
  • Use a plastic container to protect dirt and dust from damaging the materials.
  • Place promotion-specific items like decals, banners, and signs in labeled boxes for quick access.
  • Clean any accumulated grime off your used decals before you place them in storage.

Final Words

Window clings are a cost-effective way to wow new and existing customers. Enhance your existing window displays or add a pop of color to your storefront with custom designs. You can even apply the versatility of decals and clings to company cars for a fully realized brand identity.

The key to creating high-converting window clings is to focus on branded, easy to read designs that convey only the most relevant information. Focus on short messages with strong calls to action if you want to encourage customers to buy. These items are great for highlighting sales, promoting upcoming events, or seasonal product launches. Now that you know how to use window clings, you can create captivating storefront displays for your business.
